Re-upholstery. To recover or replace a well loved sofa?

As you will no doubt of picked up on by now from our social media posts and portfolio you can see that Morris Molloy, as Interior Designers do love a bit of re-upholstery. Why? Because we love being able to provide something for our clients that has been designed not just sourced and becomes a unique piece, never to be seen in the shops or online. It allows us to really get creative (if that’s what the client wants) and helps to create that overall ‘WOW FACTOR’ Interior Designed finish that we all love.

You may have noticed when you walk into any swanky bar or restaurant the chairs or bar stools are often what blow you away and this is because they are unique and the fabrics have been carefully selected to create a cohesive often theme driven Interior.

“I like the idea of re-upholstering my furniture but where do I start?”

There are several questions to ask yourself when deciding whether to recover or replace- jot all your thoughts down to see them as a whole picture, like doing a pro’s & con’s list.

Using an interior design service such us ours, we can help you realise what the benefits are of re-upholstery versus buying new, we will help you come to the right decision by raising the questions that you need to ask yourself, we will take you through the whole process to help you to decide what really is best for you.

Our approach is to always work closely with each client to understand their passion and own style whilst at the same time considering the essence of the space that we are working with, we will help you to decide and envisage how your existing furniture (with a new interior designed look) could work in the space or if buying new is definitely required then we will suggest and source a style that might fit the space better than your existing pieces currently do.

The Pro’s of Re-upholstering:

  • Reupholstering an existing piece might be a no brainer if your old furniture is looking a little worse for wear, does not go with your current or desired interior but you simply can’t bear the thought of parting with it.

  • There may be sentimental value, you most likely love the comfort, the size is perfect, it is of high quality craftmanship the only thing wrong is that it is looking a little shabby around the edges and could do with some tlc, maybe some extra filling to plump up the cushions once more.

  • In a lot of cases it is very possible that a sofa or much loved chair that you bought several years ago is of better quality than a mass produced one these days.

  • In this day and age more than ever we are all thinking of ways to live that can be beneficial for the environment, how we can reduce our impact on global warming when we reuse rather than replace, this in turn helps to save trees and forests as fewer materials are used. By reusing we can also reduce carbon emissions by avoiding buying new when it is not always necessary.

  • Timing might be a factor – deliver timescales on a new furniture may outweigh the shorter length of time to reupholster your existing sofa.

  • Perhaps your style of sofa is just no longer available; perhaps it was unique and custom made to fit into the shape and size of your room. So, reupholstering is the obvious option as getting another custom-made sofa is going to be much more expensive than the cost to reupholster the original.

  • Reupholstering gives you more freedom with the help from us as designers to decide exactly how you want the piece of furniture to look - We have an array of fabrics to choose from and we will help you to create a completely bespoke piece of furniture that you will not see anywhere else and that will create that coherent Interior Designed finish.

So now that you have read about the many benefits of reupholstering you might need to consider the following-

Is my furniture beyond repair/restoration?

If your sofa needs a complete rebuild you will probably end up spending more on the upholstery and fabric to restore it than you would on buying new.

The durability of your piece is most definitely a factor, depending on what it was made with and how well it was made . A flimsy piece will be flimsy whether it’s new or reupholstered years later.

For your sofa to be worth reupholstering you need to think about examining the frame and determining if it is sturdy enough to carry on with.

Is it sprung? Are the springs broken? If you can’t see the springs from the bottom of the sofa then can you feel them? An indication of good quality is usually a tight cover over the springs.

Is the foam of high quality? If you squash the cushions or the padded arms on the sofa, do they compress easily? If so, then its likely they are made from low-quality foam and as such, it won’t make reupholstering a good investment. However, even if the foam feels lumpy or firm this is something that our re-upholsterer can work with to make it comfortable and usable once again.

Beyond repair…

The Pro’s of purchasing new:

Purchasing new pieces gives you the flexibility to go in a completely new direction by buying a different size, shape or style to compliment a new design vision.

You may be in a position to purchase a higher quality this time around that will then last for years to come and who knows when you get tired of its original look it will still be a great investment that can be re-upholstered later down the line.

Your circumstances may of changed perhaps you need practical over comfort or vice versa and the only way to for fill your current needs are to re-select and purchase new.

Whether you are looking for a new item of furniture or re-upholstery we can help-

If you are looking for a new piece we have an array of suppliers that provide top quality craftmanship, often these can be customised to suit your requirements, size, style, colour and comfort for example.

If however you are wishing to re-upholster your existing furniture then knowing what fabrics to choose is where our expertise comes into play, whilst ultimately it does come down to budget and personal preference, we have some wonderful and unique materials to choose from and our upholstery partners that we work with are outstanding in their area of expertise.

So, if you have a well-loved sofa or chair that could do with a revamp or are looking to find something new and would like us to help bring your ideas to life, please do get in contact and we would be only too happy to assist!

From the client’s perspective

My name is Mandy and having recently used Morris Molloy to help me with my bathroom transformation I asked Kelly and Nicole if I could write a blog, to give a different perspective, really an insight into what it is like to be a client hiring an Interior designer I suppose.

As such this isn’t a conventional testimonial, it is more about taking you on the journey of my bathroom overhaul and why I would definitely recommend hiring Morris Molloy Interior Design.

The Before:

The reason for wanting the overhaul can be plainly seen in our very bland white and blue bathroom, with floor to ceiling tiles the previous owners had chosen – and which I couldn’t live with a moment longer, not to mention all those gaps! A few years into owning our house we ripped the pea bath out and put in a full shower, but to save money, put shower panels in, which I hated from the get go!

The Process:

I contacted Kelly, who came to our house for the initial meeting, with spreadsheet in hand I told her all the “must haves, would likes and don’t wants” and showed her my huge Pinterest boards and sub-sections; yep I was THAT client. I wanted a completely different look and to feel the DRAMA but just did not know where to start to make it happen!

(To jump to the end result-Kelly and Nicole met and exceeded my spreadsheet desires with all my must haves and all my would likes being included – so I have the most dramatic transformation and couldn’t be more thrilled to have such an amazing bathroom).

Kelly then went off with notes from our meeting and the magic of Interior Design started.

First concept boards were created and sent to me electronically. From the outset Kelly proved how much she had listened to me and I just knew this was going to be an epic transformation. She explained all about how the ‘flow’ would be so very important especially given our love of art by the fabulous ‘Gary Hodges’. coming up the stairs and leading into the bathroom all you see are black and white pencil drawings of animals, these cover our double height stairway and so her concept was to incorporate these into the final design.

One of the biggest changes I asked for was not to have floor to ceilings tiles, but to go with a wallpaper and my journey of learning from Kelly began.

On agreement of the concept, I then went with Kelly to the bathroom showroom and saw all the bathroom fixtures in situ, understanding the colours and dimensions she had chosen.

Throughout the project I was sent estimates, and quotations and on agreement of those, Kelly issued the invoices so I was aware of the budget at all stages.

An original wallpaper, suggested by Kelly, was amazing, but quite out there (given that she knew I wanted it to shout DRAMA!) who knew that by following her instructions to stick it up on the bathroom wall and “live with it for a few days” would be such a momentous turning point – a complete 360 for me – from loving it – to absolutely hating it – such a great piece of advice.

Yes “THAT” client again – I then went overboard and ordered several more samples of wallpaper only to call Kelly back to help me whittle them down – I almost had too much choice – but Kelly was very good at explaining how the different choices would work and how she thought some of them just would not create the look that we were hoping for.

The final two (above) were eventually chosen – which happened to be one of the originals Kelly first showed me and one I had found myself so I felt good about this & the fact that she hadn’t ruled it out.

Kelly then took me to shop for Tiles, it was here she pulled together wall tiles, shower seat tiles and floor tiles that would all come together with the selected papers to give me the dramatic look I was after. Seeing Kelly in the tile shop, with all her experience of knowing what did and didn’t work together was an education in itself and definitely something I was not confident enough to have done on my own.

Once the final colour scheme and wallpaper choice was agreed, Kelly and Nicole engaged and managed the workforce, the deliveries and the timeline. Throughout the process they kept me informed, allowed me to ask questions and they allayed any fears, they let me make informed decisions-this all showed me how well they knew their profession.

Both Kelly and Nicole were always timely in their response to emails or text messages and would come on site whenever they were needed and deal directly with any issues. I felt very confident in their project management skills and I was pleased to be kept informed the whole way through. There were as expected with such a project a couple of unforeseen issues, but these were resolved with much dedication from them both.

One of their previous blog’s talks about ‘reasons for hiring an Interior designer’ here are a few that stand out in my mind:

  • TO GAIN UNIQUE IDEAS THAT YOU MAY NOT HAVE THOUGHT OF YOURSELF

  • TO GET THAT ‘WOW’ FACTOR FINISH

  • ADDING VALUE TO YOUR PROPERTY

  • RESOURCES / ACCESS TO CONTACTS

I didn’t have to worry about getting plumbers, electricians etc. Kelly and Nicole covered everything from concept boards, bathroom specifications, getting the workforce in place, timings, ordering items, delivery – the list goes on..... I truly would recommend hiring them.

The Finished Project:

This was the first time I had hired Interior Designers and it was a great experience with an epic result.

My objective of having a dramatic bathroom with a completely different look and feel simply gives me such delight – we absolutely love it and anyone that has seen it over the festive period is stunned by how amazing it is – I wonder what you think.....

Thank you Kelly and Nicole – you rock! :-)

What did we enjoy the most?

Because of the uncertain times although not disappointingly so it has to be said there were considerably less exhibitors this year but we found this an advantage as it allowed us more time to explore each & every stand as well as enjoy several of the talks that were carefully curated to cover a range of Interior design related topics.

What did we discover?

We discovered some fabulous new suppliers that we are very much looking forward to working with in the near future such as Distinction & Astley Furniture.

We connected with companies such as J.Adams & Co & Cocovara, two fabulous new Lighting suppliers!

Who did we re-kindle with?

There really is nothing more inspiring that being surrounded by like minded people within our industry & so having not been able to see our suppliers & representatives in person for such a long time it was great to re connect with them face to face & actually be able to physically see & in some cases touch what they had to showcase. There are too many to list them all but to list just a few of our existing suppliers we were fortunate enough to visit-

Byron & Byron- creators & suppliers of a variety of hand-crafted and traditionally finished curtain poles & accessories.

John Cullen Lighting- The leading name in discreet lighting, John Cullen lighting offers a complete service for all aspects of interior and exterior lighting for the contemporary, traditional and energy efficient home, yacht, restaurant or hotel. We were fortunate enough to take a guided tour of their stand which was in fact phenomenal & geniusely designed, its no wonder they won the best stand award at the show- very well deserved.

What big names in the world of Interior Design did we listen to during the Talks/Q&A’s?

Again to name just a few:

Can Faik- Claims he has ‘The best job in the world’ & to be honest we tend to agree with him. Being paid to travel the world staying in some of the most luxurious hotels, spa’s & resorts & his job is to try & test them before writing a review for Hospitality Interiors magazine.

Kelly Hoppen- When asked whether or not she is ever asked to produce Instagram-able Interiors she immediately responded that she would absolutely never design a space to make it Insta worthy but instead designs the entire space to work together but went onto say that this will often mean one particular area may become a popular position for photography but is never her sole intention-Good answer!

Suzy Hoodless- We liked Suzy & could really relate when she said ‘Clients have lots of ideas that need editing by an Interior Designer in order to pull them all together’

Samantha Todhunter- Another favourite, Samantha talked a lot about Maximalist design she says there is a lot to be said at bringing playfulness & humour into your designs-we like Samantha!

Guy Oliver-Wow the projects this ‘Guy’ (lol) has worked on such as Claridges and Connaught Hotels & the stories he could tell were fascinating- We think he should write a book (if he hasn’t done so already!).

What did we learn?

I think most importantly from listening to the designers talks we learnt that there really are no set rules when it comes down to Interior Designers presenting their designs to clients, we all get so hung up on doing things in what is perceived as the most correct/up to date industry standard way but really it is whatever works for you & what your clients are happy with. Suzy made us laugh telling us she simply turns up with a ‘bag for life’ full of swatches & samples & then just turns it upside down on the table to empty it in front of the client & starts presenting.

What words of wisdom will we be passing onto any potential Interior Design clients?

‘Hiring an Interior Designer is about buying their experience it means you can finish your house & still have time to enjoy it as apposed to doing it yourself & it taking 30 years!’

If you or anyone you know would like help to pull your ideas together, resulting in an Interior Designed finished home that you can enjoy for years to come then please do get in contact we would be only to happy to assist!

Why would I hire an Interior Designer?

Interior Design | Interior Design Oxfordshire | Interior Design Henley on thames

We know people often question why they would need to hire an Interior Designer when there is so much inspiration out there to be accessed easily such as Pinterest & other similar social media platforms or even a simple ‘Google image search’ they also often think that hiring an Interior Designer is expensive and only reserved for people with excessive incomes. Continue reading this blog & you will discover why hiring a professional Interior Designer is more accessible, more affordable & makes far more sense than you may think-

1. YOU COULD ACTUALLY SAVE MONEY!

Interior Designers Berkshire | Interior Designers Oxfordshire

You may think that you are paying for an additional service, yet you could actually be saving money by hiring a designer, the reason being is that you gain access to not only our expertise but also our wide knowledge of retailers & suppliers, therefore, we are more likely to find you appropriate products at a range of price points to suit your budget but without compromising the look.

Plus, our expertise means that you are going to get the design right the first time around without making costly mistakes. No returns because the furniture doesn't fit the space, no extra purchases of paint or redecoration because you decide you don’t actually like the colour that you selected after all and no afterthoughts that perhaps the furniture style you chose doesn't actually work with the existing furniture that you were hoping to use.

2. TO SAVE YOURSELF PRECIOUS TIME

Interior Design Maidenhead

The idea of updating your interiors always comes with good intentions but nothing ever gets done because it is always pushed to the bottom of your to-do list. Does this sound familiar? If so hiring a designer might be the answer to making your interior design dreams for your home come true.

If there is no time in the day to even work out in your mind exactly what you would like to do in terms of home updates, let alone start planning and shopping, then it might be worth thinking about delegating this task. Delegating doesn't mean losing control and ending up with a house that doesn't feel like your home. We work with you every step of the way to establish exactly what your style is & what you are hoping to achieve, we just do all the hard work for you to pull it all together & turn your dream into a reality.

3. TO DEFINE YOUR STYLE

interior design

If you're not 100% sure on your personal style, how you want your home to look or you only know what you like & don’t like when you see it then we work closely with you to firstly define your personal style and then provide you with the inspiration to help decide on the design direction. We determine what is going on in your head & work hard to turn it into a beautiful and cohesive designs that you will love for years to come.

We have loads of tricks of the trade-up our sleeves which means that we can offer unique & various suggestions.

With our extensive contractor collaboration often we have access to services you would not have even thought of using, such as bespoke furniture makers whereby we can design furniture & have it made for a particularly difficult space or to make an area more functional.

Interior design | Interior design service | Interior designers berkshire

This is without a doubt a good reason for hiring an Interior Designer, there is absolutely no doubt about it, if you hire a good designer, you'll get a designer finish.

If you choose our full project management service, we do the finishing touches for you whereby you are presented with an entirely finished space right down to putting the artwork on the walls and the plumping of cushions!

8. ADDING VALUE TO YOUR PROPERTY

All of our expertise and finishing touches don’t just add aesthetics to your space, it also values too. The thinking outside the box ideas, being practical, and making the most from the space means that hiring an Interior Designer will inevitably add value to your property.

Before & After!

Ok we have been asked on many occasions to share before & after pictures of our client projects, however we have always been so skeptical about doing this! ‘Why?’ From fear of people glancing at the pictures quickly (not reading the blurb that goes with them) & thinking that the before pictures are a representation of our work!!! In the same breath we have also not wanted to showcase before pictures for fear of offending anyone or causing our clients any unnecessary embarrassment, that’s definitely not what we are here for! This particular client however has given us full disclosure so here goes, you asked so we are delivering.

The brief-

The initial consultation usually takes place at the clients home & here we establish the brief of what they are hoping to achieve, in this instance it was ‘to fully interior design this 3 bedroom cottage for a single Dad of three whose children visit at the weekend’s. The budget was not limitless so we needed to re use & revamp wherever possible’. So here goes….

So how did we get here we hear you ask? Well following the initial consultation we then go away & come up with a design concept by way of mood boards & samples. These are then presented to the client & if they like our ideas we then produce the detailed designs & costings, they give us the go ahead to make the magic happen & voila… it’s like ‘Changing Rooms’ just without Laurence, Carol & Linda, instead you get us!
